What separates a good rhythm guitar player from a great rhythm guitar player? There are countless things, but in this video, I'm going to focus in on the one thing that I think makes the biggest difference: dynamic strumming -- which means learning how to think more like a drummer. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

That was quite helpful. Been learning for a few years and struggling with the rhythm. Cant find an instructor on the island I live on so have been learning online. This should help quite a bit. Looking forward to checking out more of your lessons, got yourself another subscriber. 🎸🙂
Good info. Less taking ,please.
loved ti, great tip~~!

I enjoyed this video. Dave Grohl talked about this, but haven’t seen a lesson on it. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Listen to "Sunday Papers" by Joe Jackson to understand what he means by high hat and snare on guitar. A good example of this is on that song. It''s an old song but shows what he means.
Nice lesson. I've been separating the low notes (E,A,D) from the high notes (g, b, e), with variations for awhile. Along with striking the root note before the full strum, IF it serves the song. I have never tried that muted practice, but I'll give it a go. Thanks
Nice! Yeah, practicing with the muted strum is definitely a fun way to work on it.
Andrew, that was really well done. Excellent video for all level of players.
Much appreciated!
Thank you Andrew !
My pleasure!
Very interesting technique, sounds really good with drums, i started on drums when i was 14, so i could relate very easily.but should be very helpful to us all for rythum guitar keep up the good work
Thanks for watching!
Hey Andrew! Thank You for making this short but very Important & Effective insight "Lesson" on Rhythm or also on how to APROACH replicating a Drum-Kit Style on the Guitar + of course mentioning what´s absolutely important like (in my own personal opinion) the Timing you absolutely have to get down at some point as a growing Guitarist/ Guitar Player and Musician. No matter if on a Professional basis oder just as a Hobby for yourself. As long as it sounds Musical (that´s what I personally think there) you are definetily on the right way to become better in all sorts of rhytmic playing. Thats my experience from all moments of success and of course also from all failures or error-like attempts I´ve had since I started playing Guitar in March 2023! So yeah, just thank you for that point of View you focused on in this Video and I personally would absolutely love to see more content with similar topics, if you would make Videos about it :D Greetings & have a nice Day! ~Det
You're totally right! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'll definitely be making more videos on topics like this in the future. Cheers!
As a beginner I find a lot of value in your videos. Even if some of the lessons are more advanced than my skill level I can still apply something or take something away from them. Thank you! 🎸
I had the same issue of not completely understanding the lessons as a beginner but I came back to the videos after a year and the rest fell into place.
That's great to hear!
What about soloing? Do you use the mode scale that the chord progression is based on, or do you play the mode based on the chord - 1 chord ionian, 4 chord Lydian, 5 chord mixolydian…… or do you simply choose a any mode you want to play over any chord progression based on the feel/sound you want?
Thank you!
You're welcome!
great stuff!! your videos are always super informative and well made, thanks Andrew! <3
Glad you like them!

Thank you! God Bless from a 63 old from the Netherlands🎸🎵
Thank you! Cheers :)
Great lesson!
Thanks! 😃
For me the problem is how to sound nice. Like when I strum with a pick ,it sounds really sharp, not smooth at sll😢 wondering if it got something to do with the position of the right hand or any other reasons. (I’ve been using a really thin pick. )
Really thin picks create more pick noise, but are easier to get through the strings when your hand is tense. Try a slightly thicker pick and work on relaxing your picking hand so the strings kind of push the pick into an angle. A relaxed picking hand will make all the difference for you :)
Excellent video, this really helped me. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Good video
Thanks!
Hey Andrew, great video, I have a question. I noticed a few pentatonic shapes look as if they repeat down the fretboard, is it good to flesh out all the shapes by adding notes???
All the 5 pentatonic positions endlessly repeat up (or down) the fretboard. I like to fully flesh them all out by turning them into 7-note scales (major/minor) and also locating my triads using CAGED in those positions as well.
The main thing I've seen that keeps people back is wasting time on constant "lessons". Most just need to concentrate on learning repertoire. This will teach them technique.
I agree for the most part!
Do jump-cuts help with views? Does background music help with views? If not, please consider eliminating them. If they DO help, then never mind.
Appreciate the feedback. Both of those things keep people watching for longer, which typically leads to videos getting more views.
@@andrewclarkeguitar I'm sorry if I sounded uptight, keep it up, it's a great video and I'll check out your others.
@@ivandeward4601 All good! Appreciate that :)
Well done, young man. Working on getting caged, and triads under my fingers. Your explanation was clear, and concise. Really helped me out. Good health.
Glad I could help :)
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
gonna buy the diamond one just for the eternal gratitude. No I'm joking, but I think these are great and actually I think the price is justified, I might look into getting one of these in the future :)
Eat training😢
Another very good and helpful video!
I have this private playlist where I throw stuff on guitar I wanna rewatch/work on.. at this point is just Andrew's videos 😅 *added this one too
Ahaha, I'm honored! 😅 Glad you're liking the videos.
Good foundation video!🎉
Thank you!!
Both hurts my ears
They both sound like crap.
Love these vids
Thanks for watching!
Nice lesson. TY!!! 🙏
Andrew, I'm an old guy who has been playing for a long time but it's all been piecemeal - learning song by song from chord sheets, etc, Therefore, I have not learned the guitar or music, for that matter. I'm taking lessons from a guy now but I find his approach is unstructured and not sequenced. So I'm looking for an A-Z approach that will build my knowledge and flavor up my playing over time....although I don't probably have that many years left, so I need to see more immediate progress commensurate to my level of practice. I like to sing and so I want to learn how to play interestingly while singing. I don't think there's enough time for me to be the next Jeff Beck, right? So, please be honest - is your listen/play course right for me? Another subscriber below referenced a Fretboard Logic course by you which he purchased. Would that be a better starting point and where would I buy it? Thank you. You can teach, brother!
Hey! Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I do think Listen & Play would be great for you if you are wanting to get a deeper understanding of your guitar and build connections between all the different elements in music. The main focus of the course is teaching you how to listen to a song, understand what you're hearing, and apply it to the fretboard. Fretboard Logic is not a course of mine. At this time Listen & Play is the only structured guitar course I offer. Feel free to send me an email if you want to discuss further: andrewclarkeguitar@gmail.com
Excellent simplification of what is simple but often not understood as such. Thanks.
Oh yes!! Just when I was thinking that I should get into triads. I get so confused by what is different, what is similar and what is the connections between scales, triads, modes and arpeggios. More videos on triads would be great! Thank you! 🎉
More triad videos on the way! Thanks for watching :)
you talk a lot
I came across your channel a few months ago. Your videos have helped me alot with understanding music theory. Hope you keep the good work😁
Thank you! I'm glad you like the videos.
This video is great. I’m now just learning scales and one thing I would recommend is learning a little bit of the fret board. I currently have memorized the high E, low E, and A string and it has made this easier and watching videos easier too.
Totally agree. Great advice!
Another very good and informative lesson! Thanks 🙏
My pleasure!
